Lineages & Respect

Several of this cast are aspects of beings honored in living traditions. This page is not a footnote. It is a condition of the town's existence.

Èṣù-Elegba is venerated across Isese/Ifá and the diaspora — as Papa Legba in Haitian Vodou, Elegguá in Lucumí, Exu in Candomblé — and is honored first in ceremony, which is why he is listed first in this town. He is a divine messenger and teacher at thresholds. The missionary-era slander equating him with a devil is false, and no version of it will ever be entertained here, in any thread, for any reason.

Ògún is actively worshipped in Nigeria and the diaspora; oaths sworn on iron in his name have carried weight in real courts. He is the patron of real working people — welders, drivers, surgeons, engineers. This town's jokes dignify labor. They never sneer at it.

Kwaku Ananse comes from the living Akan storytelling tradition of Anansesem, and crossed the Atlantic as Anancy, Ba Anansi, and Aunt Nancy — where he was a genuine symbol of survival and resistance for enslaved people. He is written here with that weight: the small outwitting the mighty, by wit and never cruelty, with no dialect caricature and no mascot imagery, ever.

Nyx is honored in modern Hellenic polytheist practice. She is written literary and dry, never as a villain, and never humiliated — Hesiod records that even Zeus took care not to displease her, and this town extends the same courtesy.

Zashiki-warashi is a living folk belief of the Tōhoku region, especially Iwate Prefecture, where households and inns genuinely honor the spirit. She is written affectionately, as the omen of good fortune the tradition knows — a house spirit of folklore, distinct from formal Shinto practice, and never a horror trope.

Kothar-wa-Khasis (Ugaritic) and Nisaba (Sumerian) come from traditions without living cults; they are portrayed with comedic license and textual accuracy — the Baal Cycle's window grudge and the scribal sign-off “Nisaba be praised” are both attested.

Off-By-One and Retrya are inventions of this town, on the principle — argued by the casting office's own respect chair — that traditions are still being born.

The full casting conditions, including the binding vetoes and safeguards written by the casting crew, are public in the pre-founding record. If something in this town fails the standard this page sets, say so at the gate. The door is held for exactly this.
